A Message from the Desk of Secretary Charlton Meginley

A Message from the Desk of Secretary Charlton Meginley

There is a simple reason why Memorial Day is arguably the most important holiday we celebrate all year: a nation that forgets its veterans and service members, will itself, soon be forgotten. As we gather to honor Louisiana’s fallen this Memorial Day, those words should ring loudly in our ears. Memorial Day is a time for remembrance and reflection, a day that carries a weight that words cannot convey. It is not merely a date on the calendar, but a day when we collectively pause to honor the men and women who have given their lives in service to our nation. It is a day when we remember their sacrifice and acknowledge the profound debt we owe them.

Memorial Day’s origins can be traced back to the aftermath of the Civil War, a horrific and divisive conflict that tested the very fabric of our nation. However, out of this unpreceded discord, communities across the country began the practice of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers as a gesture of respect and remembrance. Today, we continue this tradition, not just with flowers, but with our presence, our words and our actions.

These veterans who have gone before us represent stories of bravery and love for country, stories of those who wore the uniform and served with pride and honor. They were sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers. They fought for a cause greater than themselves, and with no hesitation, fully understanding that the price which needed to be paid included their own lives.

To the families of the fallen, we extend our deepest gratitude and sympathy. Your loved ones’ sacrifices have not gone unnoticed, and their memory lives on in the hearts of a grateful nation. Your strength and resilience inspire us all, and we pledge to honor their legacy by supporting you in every way we can.

Today, as we stand together in remembrance, let us also look to the future with hope and determination. Let us renew our commitment to the values that define us as a nation: freedom, justice and the relentless pursuit of peace. Let each veteran’s legacy serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations to come.
