July 4, 1918
The American Express baseball team from Minneapolis played the Jordan nine at Smail Field Saturday and found they ran up against a bunch of Tartars. The Jordan team won 4 to 3.

Uncle Sam asks that you increase last year’s home canned supply by one-third. “We eat what we can, and what we can’t eat we can,” must be the reality this year.
By government sanction express companies are permitted to consolidate in order to release manpower for the war. In Jordan, the American and the Adams are now one company.

Jordan can boast as the largest troop of Farm Boy Cavaliers in the United States. Minnesota Troop #6 has 21 mounts.
July Fourth celebrations in Jordan will not be quiet. There’s a baseball game at 1 p.m. The Red Cross will have a dance at the pavilion at the picnic grounds and there is also a ball in Maerz Opera House. There are others picnics in various groves, help us celebrate.

Ed C. Johnson of New Ulm has purchased the Gold Spot Dairy from Henry Nelson and is taking over the business today.
Jordan’s two baseball teams, the Brewers of the Minnesota River League and the Rockets of the Sun Valley League, were both forced to cancel games because the weatherman gave the area a good drenching rain lasting most of the day Sunday.
The Matt Busch Sr. Estate residence on the east terrace off First Street has been sold to Andrew Schneider for $3,000.
Shonka’s Produce was sold during the week to Ed. F. Nachbar and son Robert. This is the farmer Mertens Produce on Water Street.
The Jordan Independent wants photos of youngsters in the community for a forthcoming feature titled “Citizens of Tomorrow.”
Last Saturday’s Band Concert on First Street drew a good-sized crowd with ideal weather provided. There will be another concert on July 3.
Fourth of July celebration ads— Come to Excelsior Park for a “Bang-up time” on July 4 and 5. Celebrate in New Prague with three big days on July 3-5 with Midway Show rides and concessions, three baseball games, a parade, an airshow and fireworks.
Dr. A. E. Tillisch, eyesight specialist, will be in Jordan on Thursdays in the former Dr. H. W. Havel offices in the Hotel Jordan building.

July 4, 1968
Theradyne Corporation in Jordan will hold an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. on July 14. Everyone is invited to inspect the new facilities that manufacturer wheel churns and allied medical equipment.
A reunion of the surviving members of the Jordan “Farm Boy Cavaliers” of yesteryear was held Sunday. Eight members, Roland and Wm. Hessings, Werner Krakow, Chester Lubbrand, Walter Lough, Herman Pieper, Herbert Trost and Donald Wendell were present.
A total of 129 high school students are enrolled in five classes and over 200 elementary children are taking courses being offered in the summer school program.
On Wednesday, Jordan Cub Scout Pack 332 will meet for a nature study tour at the Spring Meadow farm near East Union.

On Tuesday afternoon the Cub Scout Troop #332 raked and cleaned the yard around the log cabin. The cabin was opened and the boys got to see the antique articles, which have been donated.

The Jordan Brewers are trying to recover from one of the most devastating losing streaks in several years. They were completely wiped out, first by Belle Plaine 10 to 1; then Prior Lake 11 to 0 and finally Le Sueur 17 to 10.

Earl Stock Jr., commander-in-chief of the veterans of foreign wars of the United States, has announced the award of a golden anniversary citation to the VFW Post 2854 of Jordan. The Post was 50 years old on July 1, 1988. Robert F. Slavicek accepted the award.
Volunteers needed for work on “Save the Fall” project. Committee members are asking for more volunteers to step forward.
The Jordan Knights of Columbus recently donated $4,500 from their pull-tab charitable gambling operation for improvements at the Jordan baseball park.
Four young men of St. John’s Parish who are Cub Scouts earned the Parvil Dei emblem and were awarded the medal in a special ceremony at Mass on Sunday. They were Jonathan Goebel, Chad Schmieg, Adam Hennes and Andy Jabs.
When you start the habit of recycling you could help Scott County residents keep down the costs of their surcharge bills in the future. Bruce Jones, county solid waste planner, has indicated that when the county waste plant began operating sometime in 1990, county garage bills would go up and would even double. The county is encouraging all residents to start recycling.

Gurdy Eikenbusch is part owner of three race horses which ran at Canterbury Downs this week. Two of the three took first place at the track.

In the July edition of the Minneapolis and St. Paul Magazine, Brian Lambert, Shawn Gillian and Sarah Howard wrote an article about the best places to live in the Twin Cities. Jordan made the list for 20 “Great Neighborhoods.” The writers took into account school quality ratings and real estate.
A little more than a year ago, Rhonda Zweber found a lump on her breast. Today after a double mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation and implant, the 43-year-old Spring Lake Township resident has a new bosom and a continued positive outlook on life. Zweber was chosen to serve as the honorary chairwoman of the relay of life for Scott County.
Jordan’s Hedy Joachim recently received an award from the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. The 85-year-old activist was inducted into the DFL Women’s Hall of Fame in late May during a ceremony at the St. Paul Hotel. She was also named 2008 Woman of Distinction.
Jordan students fair better on reading tests. About 80 percent of Jordan Elementary School third graders met or exceeded expectations.
It has been a long time since the Jordan Brewers have started a season with a record this good by winning the last nine of 10 games. The Brewers continue to play well and won their first game of the season by defeating St. Benedict 7-6 on Sunday.
Jordan early childhood and family education recently took a trip with 16 students to tour the State Capitol Building and Fort Snelling.
