TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - Pro-Palestinian protests continue to rock college campuses around the country and many schools, including the University of Arizona, have commencement right around the corner,

University of Arizona officials said two of the bigger changes being made are:

  • Balloons, signs, banners, and flags of any kind will not be allowed
  • Students and faculty will have to wait until after going through security to put on their gowns and regalia

The clear bag policy and metal detector screenings will return this year, as UA takes a “game-day” approach to commencement. Other prohibited items include air horns, confetti, and selfie sticks.

13 News spoke to a soon-to-be UA graduate to see if he’s concerned.

“Not at all to be honest,” said graduating senior Adrian Patron. “I haven’t heard anything going on. No real big issues from my side.”

He said he’s been working for six years to get his degree, a Bachelor’s in aerospace engineering with a minor in mathematics.

“I’m over the moon honestly. I’m not even going to lie. I’ve been working so hard for years for this day to come,” he said.

He’s very excited to be graduating and trusts the university will keep things calm.

“I’ve seen a little bit more security around here, but I haven’t really found a reason for it.” he said. “Everything has remained chill. The protests, I think they’ve happened at night right? So I think we’ll be fine.”

On the potential of this year’s commencement having more security than normal, the university said it looks at conditions surrounding each event and adjusts accordingly.

Commencement will be held at Arizona Stadium on Friday, May 10.
